Instructions
Today I am sharing with you a colorful mixed media project that I hope will motivate you to get a little painty and create an inspiring piece of art!
Let’s get started with today’s tutorial!
Step 1: Using a palette knife spread some gesso around the thickboard medium tag. Just a light layer will do.
Step 2: Paint Broken China Distress Paint all over the tag except for the very bottom. Blend in some Mermaid Lagoon Distress Paint on the edges with an Ink Blending Tool.
Step 3: Using an Ink Blending Tool and a new foam, ink on some Twisted Citron Distress Paint.
Step 4: Using a Distress Blending Brush add some Blue Print Sketch Distress Oxide with the Tim Holtz String Stencil up the left side of the tag. Along the bottom use Distress Ink Oxide Peeled Paint and the Tim Holtz Tinsel stencil and a Distress Blending Brush to add some detail along the bottom of the tag.
Step 5: : Dip the Night Scribble Stick into water, and rub it across the Dina Wakley Scribbly Circles stamp, and stamp it on the background of the tag.
Dip the Lime Scribble Stick into water, and rub it across the Dina Wakley Seaweed Stamp from the Scribbly Fishies stamp set, and stamp it on the bottom of the tag.
Heat set if needed
Step 6: Set the tag in a box, to protect your work surface, overlay the Dotted Tim Holtz Stencil- spritz some Distress Resist Spray.
Heat set, then rub with a blending tool Vintage Photo Distress Oxide Ink. The Distress Resist Spray will resist the ink.
Step 7: Stamp a bunch of images from the Dina Wakley Scribbly Fishies stamp set on the smooth side of Distress Watercolor Cardstock with Black Soot Archival Ink. I like to stamp multiples because you never know what you might end up using
Dip the scribble sticks into water, and scribble the color onto your images. Don’t worry about staying in the lines or making things “too perfect”
Color all the images in and then fussy cut them out and set aside
Step 8: Put a dab of white gesso on an acrylic block, spritz with water, then using a wet paintbrush, flick white droplets onto the background of the tag.
Step 9: Using Potting Soil Archival Ink, stamp a few of the seaweed images from Scribbly Fishies along the bottom.
Step 10: Ink blend with Blueprint Sketch Distress Oxide onto two pieces of cardstock, approx 1.5” x 3”. Die cut “found” and “lost” with the Tim Holtz Sizzix Mixed Media 6 Thinlits Dies. Keep the negative of “found” and the pieces of “lost”. Ink the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Oxide.
Die cut 4 more of each words out of black cardstock. Then using Distress Collage Medium Matte, layer all the black cardstock pieces and adhere the Blue Print Sketch piece on the top. Trim any extra black cardstock.
Step 11: Using Dina Wakley Media Ultra Thick Gel Medium adhere the fishes and words, “lost” then “found.”
Use a white gel pen to add detail to the fish
Step 12: Using a little bit of Vintage Photo Distress Oxide Reinker and Texture Paste to mix up some “sand”.
Spread it along the bottom of the tag
Step 13: Use Blue Ribbon and Caribbean Coast enamel accents to add some bubbles.
Step 14: Adhere the “&” from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Findings Alpha Parts- Newsprint with Ultra Thick Gel Medium.
I hope this has inspired you to play with layers and make a fun piece of art for yourself or someone special in your life!
