Cathedral Window Journal Spread by Megan Whisner Quinlan

Get inspired to create a mixed media spread on the denim pages of the Dina Wakley MEdia Blue Journal with this tutorial by Megan Whisner Quinlan. Here, Megan shares how she takes the intimidation out of staring at a blank page and breaks down techniques into simple steps.

Instructions

When facing the blank page, the art journaler can feel intimidated. Using simple techniques, you can have a little fun and add some interest to a page with some doors or in this case some beautiful cathedral windows. Follow along to learn how to add this simple design to your next art journal spread.

Cathedral Window Journal Spread Step 1

Step 1: Gather your supplies. Here is a picture of the two stamp sets that were used in the project. However, you can use any other stamps for your window’s focal images, as long as they are small enough to fit inside.

Step 2: Stamp the three cathedral window and focal images onto white cardstock with Archival Ink. You could also choose one window several times depnding on your preferences. Cut out your images.

Step 3: Take your window cutouts (stamped side up) and place them on top of the identical image and stamp on the underside. This way, when your windows “open” they will have the same print on the inside. Cut your windows in half.

Step 4: Stencil the Mantra text in turqoise all over a white piece of cardstock with a Mini Ink Blending Tool.

Step 5: Glue down your focal images onto the stenciled cardstock. Decide where you want each of your window sets to lay, on top of your images. (You can leave more less “white” space depending on the look you want to achieve). Once you have your layout settled, staple your window along the outer side of each window frame. Cut out window structure to the exact shape of the window.

Step 6: To create a background, stencil randomly onto your journal page (here the denim page was used).

Step 7: Glue your windows to your page with Ultra Thick Gel Medium.
