Instructions

Step 1: I laid down the collage paper on the burlap page using Matte Multi Medium. I also covered the top side of the collage paper with it to act as a sealer since I wasn’t going to use gesso (although you could definitely use clear gesso for this step.) I ended up stepping away to let it dry naturally although usually I’m much too impatient for that and use my Ranger Heat it Tool to speed up the process.

Step 2: Next, I started to sketch out the face with Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks lightly following the lines of the collage paper. This part looks like a hot mess but don’t worry – it’s just a way to lay down some color and get the process started. Also, note that I leave the black line art collage paper off to the side while I’m working to reference when I need to as the white gets covered up fast.

Step 3: At this point, I had my face sketched mostly in and I wanted to add more color so I pulled out Dina Wakley Media Heavy Body paints in a few colors like Buff, Blushing, Turquoise and Olive. Using a paintbrush, I started blending the paint with the Scribble Sticks – they blend so beautifully together adding shading naturally where I used darker Scribble Sticks.

Step 4: While I was pretty happy with how everything was turning out, I wanted to add more texture and interest to the background. I pulled out the Scribbly Circles Background stamp and The Best Hearts stencil to do this. I stamped with Archival Ink in black soot and brought out the Blushing paint more in my page by using that with the stencil. I added a few marks with paint in different shapes and colors as well as journaled a bit.

Step 5: The last thing I wanted to do was add some collage words to title my page. I love love love Dina Wakley Media’s Collage words and was happy to see a second one released. Following my journaling I chose the sheet that says The Secret? Keep Going. Every day is another chance. I actually adhered it to some white cardstock so it would stand out from my background more adding a bit of black ink around the edges to make it stand out. Then I adhered it to the burlap with Dina Wakley Media Heavy Gel Medium.

Here are some close ups of all the paint and texture. I love that you can still see all the burlap texture underneath everything yet the collage paper keeps it all contained instead of seeping through to the page behind it.
